The American financial system was shaken to its core on Sunday. Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. faced the prospect of liquidation, and Merrill Lynch & Co. agreed to be sold to Bank of America Corp.
The press can no longer ignore it’s responsibility. It must stop feeding the gutter sniping that has passed for campaigning in the weeks following the conventions and challenge the candidates on issues of real substance.
